More Americans are buckling up than ever before thanks to the continued dedication of law enforcement agencies and stepped-up enforcement campaigns like Click It or Ticket. Together we have successfully raised the national seat belt use rate to 79 percent, up four percentage points from 2002. This is an amazing achievement for the traffic safety community, but our work is far from done. More than 59 million Americans are still unbuckled and traffic crashes are one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. This Memorial Day an unprecedented number of law enforcement agencies will focus on our most at-risk drivers and enforce seat belt laws by implementing the proven strategy of stepped-up, high-visibility enforcement.
The Click It or Ticket Mobilizations are coordinated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) with support from the Air Bag & Seat Belt Safety Campaign of the National Safety Council, and in partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation, the National Transportation Safety Board, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and law enforcement nationwide. The two-week enforcement wave runs from May 24 – June 6, 2004, and more than 13,000 law enforcement agencies are expected to participate and focus enforcement on our most at-risk drivers – teens and young adults.
This Law Enforcement Action Kit provides fact sheets and template materials to help you inform the media in advance of your enforcement efforts to maximize your news coverage and get the message out to the local area residents. Please customize the materials for the campaign in your state, and feel free to modify the language given the level of enforcement your agency is able to conduct. If you have any questions, please call your state highway safety office or your Campaign organizer (see the Resource Lists below).
Thank you for your ongoing support!
